Hike Notes:
I deliberately hiked the service road even though it is possible to drive up to the foot of the peak. It is possible to drive up to the foot of the peak.
This is the easiest Big Bear peak to get 2m contacts, due to its clear view into the Los Angeles area.
This is where I parked and started hiking. I chose this spot mainly on Alltrail’s recommendation.
Stay left on the service road. Th trail to the right will eventually take you back to the service road, but I like direct routes.
Again, go left here.
Bottom of the peak. If you drive all the way, park here and hike the short distance to the top. At the top is the lookout station. It has a nice balcony you can operate from. The lookout was friendly and is a ham. He normally listens on 146.520. I suggested 146.580 if he wants to talk to SOTA activators.
The lookout station is majestically perched on the peak. Quite a sight. At the time, there were dark clouds with thunder on lightening. Reminded me of Doctor Frankenstein’s castle.
